Metagaming

Don't let real-life knowledge ruin your roleplay experience! Stick to what your character knows for authentic gameplay and an immersive experience for everyone.

Metagaming in role-playing games refers to a player's use of outside knowledge, not available to their character, to inform their character's actions. This can include knowledge of the game's mechanics or events happening outside the character's knowledge, and is considered breaking character. The emphasis in role-playing is on accurate character depiction, so the use of metagaming is generally considered unsporting or cheating.

Examples of metagaming include:

  • Watching someone's stream while you are both in the city

  • Sitting in a Discord call while you and anyone else in the call is in the city

  • Seeing how to accomplish a task or find a secret place based on a clip or screenshot shared in the Discord

  • Using knowledge from another character's backstory or personality to influence decisions, even if the current character has no knowledge of that information.

  • Taking advantage of real-life resources or tools outside the game, such as online forums or guides, to gain knowledge not available to the character.

  • Using real-life relationships with other players to influence interactions within the game, rather than allowing the characters to interact on their own terms.

  • Using in-game tools or abilities in unexpected ways, based on knowledge of the game's mechanics rather than what the character would logically know or understand.

  • Using knowledge from another server to influence decisions based on common resources.
