Hostage Negotiation and Demands
Playing to Win: Why a Win/Victory Focused Minded Approach Can Harm Roleplaying
When it comes to hostage negotiation, certain demands are not allowed as they create an unfair advantage for the hostage-taker and put the police role-player at a disadvantage.
For example, requests for weapons or tasers are prohibited, as is asking for the police to drop their vehicles.
Hostage-takers are limited to making one of the following basic demands if they choose
- No spike strips
- No helicopter
Safe passage to the vehicle is a given in a hostage situation, and spikes will never be placed before a scene begins unless there are more cars than allowed per the heist rules defined in Group Size/Limits.
If spikes are placed because of more cars than allowed, it is not acceptable for the hostage-takers to kill the hostage due to this and expect it to be "OK". Highest in command will make this call if it is over limit.
Demands that require the police to leave the scene, clothing store, or go to the police station are not allowed.
It's important to follow these guidelines because they ensure that everyone has an equal chance to roleplay their characters and create an exciting, unpredictable story. Making inappropriate demands or trying to overly control a scene can take away from the overall roleplaying experience.
By focusing on creative, fair demands, everyone can participate in an enjoyable and challenging scene that brings the story to life.
Be creative, have interesting scenes and think of unique but realistic demands that set your scenes apart from others.
